Laurel Grain Company History & Business Description

At a general meeting held May 28,1965, it was decided to proceed with a project involving (4) 80,000 bushel dry tanks, (2) 13,500 bushel wet tanks, a 2,000 bushel grain dyer, 50 foot lift, and a 50 foot scale. Laurel Grain Company was incorporated June 24, 1965. A plot of land of approximately 4 acres, adjacent to, and in the back of the Laurel Auction Block was purchased from the Southern Delaware Truck Growers’ Association. Laurel Grain Company went into operation on September 22, 1965 and been operated continuously since that day. After the success of the first year, a special stockholders’ meeting was held in January 1966. It was decided during this meeting that they would double the original facility capacity by adding 4 more 80,0000 bushel tanks and 2 more wet tanks. In the early 1970’s, an additional 80,000 bushel tank was constructed with two additional wet tanks. As storage interest from stockholders increased during the 1970’s, storage space was issued and purchased to build two 80,000 bushel tanks.

During the 1980’s and early 1990’s, farming changed as advancements in grains improved yields and the addition of irrigation on farmland became prevalent in the Mid-Atlantic area. Due to the increased yields now being harvested by farmers, Laurel Grain Company constructed their first 250,000 bushel tank in 1998. With the success of the 250,000 bushel tank being completed and filled, another tank of the same size was constructed in 1999.

As grain prices started to climb in the 2000's, more farmers maximized all the available ground they could to the production of grains. At this time, Laurel Grain Company decided they needed to grow with the industry. In 2006, an additional pit was constructed on the property to speed up the unloading times. Two additional 250,000 bushel tanks were constructed in 2007 and 2008. The twenty-third tank constructed on the property was constructed with an additional aeration system for the storage of wheat. With the success of the four 250,000 bushel tanks located at Laurel Grain, it was decided that the company could construct additional tanks and better serve a wider area of farmers. In 2009, two tanks totaling 500,000 bushel capacity were constructed.

A dryer was installed in 2010 to speed up drying times with the current capacity of grain that the Laurel Grain Company was able to handle in a given year. In 2013, two more tanks with 500,000 bushel capacity were constructed.

We have recently replaced several of our older tanks, bringing our total number of tanks down to eighteen (18).  Our dryers have also been upgraded, bringing our current drying capacity to just over 7,400 bushels per hour.
